1st of January comes and we are all full of New Year’s resolutions. We want to go to the gym more often. Drink less wine - more water. Having a healthy lifestyle and bla bla bla. Let me check… Nearly seven weeks into the New Year, how are you holding up? How many of your New Year’s resolutions did you keep? One? None? Did the old habits sneak up on you again? If you’re guilty and you know it, clap your hands. Been there. Done that. No need to feel ashamed.
Do you love to-do-lists as much as I do? Do you get a kick out of ticking them off? To-do-lists make you feel good about yourself. You feel accomplished. You feel proud of what you have achieved in your day.
Here comes the trick!
Put up a big calendar on your wall. Tick off those days you have sticked to your New Year’s resolution. Of course, it also works with a small pocket calendar. It’s more challenging though if you have it up your wall for everyone to see.
Let’s say one of your New Year’s resolutions is to go to the gym three times a week. Put a green tick on the day you’ve managed to go. If you’ve achieved it three times a week, mark the entire week with a huge green tick. If you haven’t managed, the world won’t stop. You mark the week with a tiny red cross – let’s still be gentle with ourselves. And you start again the following week. I promise, your Monkey Mind will make sure you achieve it. It’s wired to feel good about committing to positive changes. The little fighter in you is also encouraged to make as many green ticks as possible. And that’s the ultimate goal, you want this calendar plastered in green ticks.
Science says it takes 66 days to form a habit! So, try it out – just two months in, you’ve established a routine. Am sure you royally tricked your old habits and kicked them in the butt. Well done you for sticking to your New Year’s resolutions.
